Our Danish escapade commence in Copenhagen where you will stay in a central located hotel the night before; we recommend Andersen Boutique Hotel next to the central station. (The pre night /post night in Copenhagen are NOT included). We head out of Copenhagen by the motorway towards the island of Funen and Jutland. Then we cross the 23 km long bridge between the islands Zealand and Funen (or Fyn as we call it in Danish), where we drive across the southern part of the island to the cosy and picturesque old harbour town of Faaborg.
In Faaborg we’ll have guided walk in the narrow streets and a visit to the art museum with paintings of the life in rural Denmark 150 years ago.
We’ll enjoy lunch in the harbour of Faaborg before driving the short tour to Bøjden Ferry harbour, from where we sail across the strait “Lillebælt” to the island of Als. We continue through Southern Jutland to our hotel Benniksgaard overlooking the Flensborg Fiord which is the border between Denmark and Germany.
Dinner and overnight at Benniksgaard.
After breakfast we drive across Jutland to the west coast. Here we find The Wadden Sea National Park UNESCO World Heritage landscape. The Wadden Sea is the largest unbroken system of intertidal sand and mud flats in the world. The site covers not only the Danish Wadden Sea but also huge areas in Germany and Holland.
We start our visit at the new Wadden Sea Centre, which is the gate to the UNESCO World Heritage landscape. The centre was inaugurated in 2018 and is an architectural pearl, that almost seems to grow from the ground and adapted to the flat marshland.
Afterwards we have a short walk in this unique landscape.
Just after noon we arrive in the oldest town in Denmark, Ribe, dating back to year 700 AD. At first a summer trading market which developed into a royal town, where the first church in Denmark was established app. 850 AD. Up to the middle of the 1800’s one of the most important towns in Denmark. We begin our visit with a lunch at an old restaurant at the old pier. The we take a guided walk around the old town center including the cathedral.
Then we continue to a modern land art installation by the famous Danish sculptor Robert Jacobsen, who have created 18 huge sculptures in the old gravel pit Tørskind Grusgrav.
After this encounter between nature and art we drive over the Lillebælt Bridge to Funen. Then we reach Hindsgavl Castle Hotel where we stop for dinner and overnight. Before dinner you’ll have ample of time for a stroll in the big park surrounding the castle and overlooking Lillebælt – the strait between Funen and Jutland and praised in the Danish national hymn.
After breakfast the last day we make a stop in the small village Brenderup, where we visit a little design workshop making mobiles that are sold all over the world.
Then we reach the city of Odense where the world famous Danish fairy tale author, Hans Christian Andersen, was born. We visit his childhood home, which is turned into a museum. After the visit we enjoy a lunch of Danish open faced sandwiches at an old inn in central Odense.
In the afternoon we drive back to Copenhagen across the bridge over the strait, Storebælt. Just after the bridge we make a stop at the remaining ramparts of the Viking ring fortress Trelleborg; one of several fortifications around Denmark build by one of the first kings of Denmark.
Early evening arrival to Copenhagen.
